Kingfishers class have been learning about the rules and skills needed to play basketball. So far, the children have covered areas including,
- Dribbling skills
- Passes used in basketball and why
- Attacking and defending
- Shooting to score
- Finding open space
- Tactical play
Children now understand what double dribbling is and why it is not allowed. They understand that different passes are used at different times depending on where their teammate is placed on the court. The children have the ability to know what attacking and defending looks like and what they can tactically do about it. When Kingfishers class are trying to score, they use the word B.E.E.F to help them with their technique. This stands for Bounce, Eyes, Elbow, Flick.
In the infants phase, all 3 classes are learning about their fundamental skills and how to master them. This can impact positively on their future PE lessons. These skills include,
- Running
- Jumping
- Hopping
- Throwing
- Catching
- Sipping
- Kicking/dribbling
For example, when learning to jump, the children have been exiting using both feet but also using one foot to try and work out which is their more dominant leg. To increase the difficulty of their jumping, the children have been widening the distance between each jump.
When working on throwing and catching, the children have been using different types of balls and equipment, like tennis balls, air flow balls, footballs and beanbags to challenge themselves when working with a partner. In their throwing classes, they have also been aiming at different targets through throwing and rolling.
