EYFS – Junk Model Spiders
Reception class will make junk model spiders. They will use recycled materials to first make a body of a spider, which will be painted black, before choosing an appropriate material to add legs. The children will learn that spiders are arachnids, and have eight legs. Finally, the children will attach the legs to their spider’s body, and stick on eight eyes.
Christmas Tree Decoration from natural resources
Children in reception class will use natural resources around them to create a decoration. They will investigate how to attach natural materials together, perhaps deciding to thread, knot, or glue. They will choose carefully which coloured materials to add to their decoration to create a festive design.
Year One
Moving Pictures and Traditional Tales
Children in year one will learn about moving pictures. They will investigate how a slider works, and learn how to make a lever. The children will use a split pin to make a piece of their picture move. The children will learn two traditional tales, before using this knowledge to design a picture with moving parts. They will use paper and cardboard to create their design, applying their knowledge of levers and sliders to bring their picture to life.
Christmas Tree Decorations using Natural Resources
Children in year one will use natural resources around them to create a decoration. They will investigate how to attach natural materials together, perhaps deciding to thread, knot, or glue. They will choose carefully which coloured materials to add to their decoration to create a festive design.
Year Two
Fabric Faces
Children in year two will examine their faces, looking at each of their features. They will discuss the shapes which make up a face, and how these fit together. The children will design their own fabric face, which will look like themselves. They will explore the different materials which they could use to create their face. The children will use a mixture of textures to create a fabric face, attaching the materials together by stitching, and gluing.
Christmas Tree Decorations using Plant Dyes
Children in year two will explore natural dyes, looking at how different plants and vegetables can be used to dye, and paint fabric. They will use these skills to create their own Christmas tree decoration, with the dyes incorporated to create a festive design.
Year Three
Battery Life
Year three children will learn how to make a circuit. They will explore two types of electrical circuit, learning how to create a switch using a split pin. The children will then examine torches, looking at how these are constructed and how they work. They will design their own torch, before making this using cardboard tubes and paper cups. The children will finally insert a completed circuit to make their torch glow.
Christmas Tree Decorations using Sustainable Resources
Children in year three will explore sustainable materials. From a given selection of materials they will create a Christmas tree decoration, from their own design. Finally, pupils will use decorative materials, alongside their recycled materials, to create a festive design.
Year Four
Juggling Balls
Year four children will learn how juggling balls are made. They will examine the history of juggling as a circus act, before looking at different types of juggling balls used. The children will design their own juggling ball. Once designed, the children will cut the main shape out of fabric, before applying their design. Finally, the children will use a mixture of electric sewing machine, and hand stitching, to create their juggling balls.
Christmas Tree Decoration with Lift the Flap
Children in year four will learn how to make a working flap, scoring cardboard to make it move. They will look at how flaps are used in advent calendars, with a design hidden behind the ‘door’. Pupils will design their own lift the flap, with a festive design inside.
Year Five
Felt Phone Cases
Children in year five will examine different designs of phone case. They will evaluate these for durability and ease of access. The children will then design their own phone case, which will be constructed using felt. Once designed, the children will stitch on a design to their base fabric, and stitch the entire piece together. Finally, the children will evaluate their phone cases.
Christmas Tree Decoration with Moving Parts
Year five will design a Christmas tree decoration which has moving parts. They will learn how to use split pins to make a moving part. Pupils will then investigate how to thread these split pins together, to create a Christmas character with moving legs and arms. Once the thread is pulled, the arms and legs will move up and down. Finally, pupils will decorate these using mixed materials.
Year Six
Earthquake Proof Homes
Children in year six will learn about earthquakes across the world. They will learn how earthquakes occur and the possible repercussions from these. Children will examine how Japanese engineers have developed building styles to make the buildings ‘earthquake proof’. They will then design their own earthquake proof home, using the same style of building learnt about, before creating this using recycled materials. Finally, the buildings will be strength tested.
Christmas Tree Decoration made from Material
Children in year 6 will create a Christmas tree decoration using fabric as their chosen material. They will design a hanging decoration with a festive theme. Pupils will then cut out, and add designs to the fabric, before hand stitching this together. Finally, a button and loop fastening will be added, to hang the decorations from a branch.
